Interstate 65 stop leads to human trafficking charges

A traffic stop last week on Interstate 65 near Dayton could be linked to human trafficking out of Mexico, according to court documents filed Thursday in Tippecanoe County.

Twelve people, including an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl, were found riding in the five-passenger SUV. One child was allegedly sitting on the floor under another passengers' legs.

Crime-fighting trends, election fraud among Zoeller's committee assignments

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller last week joined a top-level committee of state attorneys general, county prosecutors and U.S. Attorneys that will focus on setting crime-fighting priorities.

Zoeller visited the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. last week in his new role as a member of the Executive Working Group on Prosecutorial Relations or EWG.

The committee includes the state attorneys general of Indiana, Colorado, Delaware, New Jersey, Louisiana, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wisconsin, as well as several U.S. Attorneys from federal court districts and county prosecutors and district attorneys from cities around the nation. Tom Porteous, the director of Human Rights Watch in London, told Deutsche Welle that "the major factor contributing to sex slavery is supply and demand. There is a huge demand for prostitution and an equally huge supply of participants because of the economic situation in the world."

An estimated half a million women are trafficked annually for the purpose of sex slavery. They are exported to over 50 countries including Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States. Sex slaves are smuggled taking a route known as the "Eastern route" from eastern European countries, through Poland and subsequently into European Union countries. The cities of Prague, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt are common final destinations for the slaves.

Earlier this month, Luis DeBaca attended a reunion. It wasn't a nostalgic gathering of old classmates or friends from his Huxley childhood or Iowa State days, not an event replete with fond memories and school pride. The memories would best be forgotten. The pride was of a different kind.

The anniversary marked the end of 250 people's enslavement as forced laborers. Ten years ago, as a prosecutor against human trafficking at the U.S. Justice Department, DeBaca had been pivotal in freeing them from an unscrupulous garment-factory owner in American Samoa. The workers had been brought from Vietnam and kept through threats, beatings, indebtedness and food deprivation. Things came to a head after one dared to resist and was beaten to the point of losing an eye.

The survivors have moved on and up. And so has DeBaca. He recently left Justice for the State Department, and prosecutions for diplomacy. President Barack Obama appointed him ambassador-at-large for trafficking in persons.

Children forced into prostitution being arrested

Children who are forced into prostitution are often being arrested for a multitude of offenses and sent through the juvenile justice system instead of being treated as victims, according to a nationwide report released this week.

Shared Hope International, a nonprofit that helps victims of sexual exploitation and violence, looked at data from cities throughout the country, including San Antonio. The group released its study at a congressional hearing on human trafficking and comes as Texas tries to create statewide groups to tackle the issue.

Human trafficking experts call for police training in D.C. bill

The District is rated as one of the top 10 locations for human trafficking in the country and several nonprofit groups told D.C. Council members that police officers should be trained to recognize human trafficking cases as the city steps up its efforts to fight it.

Representatives of groups like Polaris Project, Free the Slaves and Fair Fund made their request during a public hearing on a human trafficking bill Monday. If passed in its current form, the bill would make human trafficking for the purposes of sex and labor a crime. It would allow victims to sue their pimps and require the city to keep statistics on trafficking cases.

On Monday, the anti-human-trafficking groups also asked that the bill include training for police officers and other first responders.

"Young people are not able to express their victimization in ways that clearly identify it," said Andrea Powell, co-director of Fair Fund. "Cases that are not reported result in continued abuse."

The groups said District police officers received periodic training between 2004 and 2007, but it was cut when federal funding went dry. A police spokeswoman could not immediately confirm the training history....Read more

25-year-old Jamie A. Shelley of Richmond, is charged with sexual misconduct by service provider with detainee, a Class C felony carrying a standard four-year prison term, and trafficking with an inmate, a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum one-year jail term.

The fact remains that the report’s rating of over 170 countries is both thorough and largely consistent with facts as observed, reported by the media and examined in other comprehensive reports pertaining to the same issue. Indeed, the UN’s own Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, launched by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in February 2009, affirms much of the State Departments’ findings regarding the pattern of abuses reported around the world, most noticeably in Africa, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

The report examined the calamity and governmental responses to the exploitation of people, including children, for the purposes of forced labour, sexual servitude and stolen organs. At least 12.3 million adults and children are used to sustain the thriving business of modern-day slavery. One can only predict that the number is much higher, considering that human traffickers have little interest in divulging exact data.

Many Americans may think of modern day slavery as existing exclusively within the informal service sector in far off lands — usually sex slavery or domestic servitude — and thus do not consider it to be a problem related to free trade, or America at all. The global financial crisis has increased the worldwide trade in trafficked persons, says a State Department report released Tuesday. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the report aims "to shine the light brightly on ... modern slavery."

The State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report also says trafficking has increased in Africa and slaps six African nations on a blacklist of countries not meeting the minimum standard of combating trafficking. The report, mandated by Congress, features data and statistics from 175 countries around the world regarding the amount of human trafficking that goes on within their borders.The report cites the International Labor Organization, which estimates that at least 12.3 million adults and children are victims of forced labor, bonded labor and sex slavery each year.

(EP News)--STOP Child Trafficking Now (SCT Now) is a global campaign that targets the source, namely predators who drive the criminal sex industry worldwide. The organization works with specially trained elite operatives to infiltrate, investigate and bring to justice the predators victimizing children. SCT Now Founder Lynette Lewis said the need is great. “The day you rescue a child, two more will be brought in to replace that child if the demand continues to exist,” she said. UNICEF, the UN organization charged with the protection of children worldwide, estimates 1.2 million children are trafficked each year within countries, as well as across borders.
